Calculate the environmental impact and display of food products with the new Eco-design module of the Keendoo PLM software suite

Impact calculation and environmental display solution for food products: Keendoo eco-design module

This new solution, which is new on the market, makes it possible to calculate and display the environmental impact of food products. It aims to make manufacturers autonomous for these environmental impact calculations.

Why this solution?

The environmental display expected by consumers

According to a study conducted by BVA in early December 2022, consumers who are sensitive to environmental issues represent 84% of those surveyed. This represents an increase of 12 points compared to 2014.

86% of them say they are interested in an environmental display. First, they expect a display that allows them to understand the environmental impact of products. Secondly, it would allow them to choose between different products of the same category or a substitute category (e.g. chicken cuts, under label, standard or vegetable substitutes).

Another lesson of this study is that these consumers expect justified and transparent information on the environmental performance of products. This expectation is reflected in the requirements of distributors.

2024: deployment of official environmental labelling

Provided for in the Agec (2020 ) and Climat & Resilience (2021) laws, the calculation method for an official environmental display for food products is due to be published on March 16, 2023. This will be followed by a period of product testing, which may lead to some adaptations of the calculation method, leading to a complete and operational display system in the second half of this year (seeADEME's provisional timetable ), for deployment from 2024.

Environmental display: how is it calculated?

The calculation of the official environmental display will be based on the PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) supported by the European Union, which proposes calculation methodologies. It specifies the framework of the life cycle analysis (LCA), the reference method for quantifying the impact of a product(ISO 14040 standard). This methodology makes it possible to measure 16 environmental impact indicators of a product, at all stages of its life cycle: production of raw materials and packaging, transport, processing, storage, distribution, cooking, recycling...).

This approach must also be weighted by other indicators, to take into account the specificities of agricultural and agri-food products (production methods, pesticides, biodiversity, etc.), as explained by ADEME in its January 26 information note.

Keendoo solution: new Eco-design module

Keendoo proposes the new Eco-design module that makesLCA andenvironmental display of products accessible to agri-food companies, and facilitateseco-design. Co-developed with O2m Conseil, this new solution combines expertise in eco-design and IT. It meets two needs:

  • measurement : calculation of the environmental impact of products (life cycle analysis "LCA", environmental display),
  • Action: Keendoo helps to optimize the environmental performance of products, by engaging in an eco-responsible innovation approach thanks to the other PLM modules (formulation, innovation project management, industrial test management, cost price, packaging, publication).

Another feature: its accessible ergonomics makes this environmental approach accessible to companies, without the need to subcontract the calculations, which has its price in terms of budget and speed.

Associated with consulting to accelerate the eco-design process in agri-food companies

In addition, O2m offers consulting and support services to food industry professionals to implement the eco-design approach, in order to identify the most relevant improvement levers.
