Risk of recall of food products

HOW TO SECURE AND ACCELERATE PACKAGING CREATION?

The shrimp fell through the cracks!

Friday. Just as everything is looking good for a weekend break after a week full of two launches, an IFS audit and a customer visit, the switchboard calls the Quality Manager. "Samia, I have Mr REYNIER from the DDPP at reception. He wanted to see Mr Martin. But as he is away on business, he asks to meet you".
The problem is quickly raised by the representative of the state services. He takes out of a bag a tray of our new shrimp egg rolls. "Don't you think there's something missing from your labelling? Samia NEAUX blushes. At first glance, she can see the shrimp on the illustration and in the name, but not in the list of ingredients.

Untenable. It is better to acknowledge the non-conformity. This does not prevent a warning, a date for a second inspection, but above all a product recall. Because of the omission of shrimps, two allergens are not indicated: "Crustaceans" and "Sulphites".

Crisis meeting

The emergency is to manage the crisis. Traceability, information, organisation of returns and destruction, stock levels, relaunching of new production to limit shortages in the middle of a DV surge. When the pressure is off, the CEO, Dominique MARTIN, inevitably calls together all the product development players: the financial balance sheet is heavy. The agenda is simple: How can it be possible to have incorrect labelling?

The debate revolved more around the practices in place and the solutions to be envisaged than around the search for responsibilities. Patrice Parigny, R&D Director, was asked to take the floor and describe the flow of information leading to labelling.

How could this labelling error have gone unnoticed despite proofreading?

If the participants are quickly identified (R&D / Purchasing / Quality / Marketing / Packaging Manager / Design Agency / Printer), the role of each one, their stage of intervention, their validations, the back and forth, quickly inflame the debate. Not everyone has the same vision. And the well-structured page of the paper board is covered with arrows in all directions.

Dominique MARTIN is especially impressed by the number of speakers, versions, documents and e-mails exchanged. All of this was done in a hurry and in a hurry. And by dissociating the different components of the pack, the final touch-up of an illustration can very well be associated with a provisional text. When it comes to printing, the focus is more on the colour rendering than on the boring text. The subject is complex. The situation that SOPRODAL has just experienced is not fortuitous and it can happen again.
It is time to change practices.

How can we ensure that the packaging complies with all requirements, regulatory, marketing and technical?

Are there any solutions for making the graphic chain more fluid and labelling more secure?
